What Is Residential Insulation?
Rockford Insulation Pros provides insulation services to new homes and retro-fits existing homes. A home can lose energy through cracks in the attic, roof, windows or any other drafty areas. An air seal can stop these drafts from entering the home while also blocking out pollutants, allergens, pests, mold and mildew.
Home insulation keeps the interior temperature cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Insulation also muffles outside noises from entering the home, promoting a more peaceful environment. Properly insulating a home reduces energy payments, promotes better air quality, protects the health of the inhabitants, cuts back on the use of natural resources, and improves overall comfort.
Why Insulate Your Home?
Having a properly insulated building helps maintain preferred temperatures all year round.
By saving energy with insulation, you will also be saving money on energy bills, making insulation a great investment for the long term.
No one wants to hear their neighbor’s dog barking in the middle of the night. Having proper insulation and air sealing in the home can reduce the presence of unwanted noises from the outdoors and other parts of the building as well.
Proper insulation reduces carbon emissions by cutting down the amount of heating or cooling needed in a building and therefore using less electricity or fossil fuels to condition atmosphere of the structure.
Insulation keeps walls at a warmer temperature and therefore helps prevent condensation from occurring.
Benefits Of Residential Insulation
Insulating your home creates a comfortable environment for all who live inside while decreasing energy payments. Installing insulation also raises the property value of a home, making the house more appealing to potential buyers. Adding insulation such as spray foam to an unused attic space can transform the area into a new office, playroom, bedroom or storage area. Creating a new living space through the use if insulation increases the value of the home as well.
Another benefit of home insulation, is noise control. Adding insulation to an attic quiets the sound of rain falling on the roof, while insulated exterior walls block outside noises such as cars or trains passing by, sirens going off, or dogs barking. Interior insulated walls allow privacy from room to room while blocking out loud noises such as televisions, musical instruments, babies crying or sounds from appliances such as washers and dryers.
Air sealing a home promotes a healthier environment and air quality by blocking out pollutants, allergens, pollens, pests, mold, mildew, and condensation. Fresh air ventilation systems can also be added, ensuring the best air quality possible within the structure, while preventing respiratory illnesses. Overall home insulation provides comfort, reduces energy payments, protects health, muffles noises, and increases property value.
Which Products Can Be Used To Insulate A Home?
Blown-In Insulation, also known as loose fill insulation, can be used in attics or blown inside of existing walls. Installing Blown-In Insulation inside an attic can be extremely beneficial if the attic has limited space, which would make installing fiberglass batts tremendously difficult.
Existing walls can be filled with Blown-In Insulation by drilling a hole one yard above the floor and another hole one foot below the ceiling and blowing the loose fill insulation in with an insulation blower. The holes are then covered by plastic plugs.
Benefits of Blown-In Insulation:
- Deters Fire
- Muffles Sound
- Easy Installation
- Conserves Energy
- Increases Comfort
- Reduces Mold And Moisture
Cellulose insulation is a type of green insulation that is composed of recycled paper and news print, which if not used for insulation, could have been put into a landfill. Installing cellulose insulation decreases toxins in your home, reduces landfill waste, and is easy to install.
Cellulose insulation comes as a loose fill, which can be blown into open attic floors and small holes in existing walls. Cellulose insulation is mixed with boric acid, ammonium sulfate, or borax which is are used pest repellants and a fire retardants. It also has an R-Value of about R-3.5 per inch.
Benefits of Cellulose Insulation:
- Inexpensive
- Deters Pests
- Fire Retardant
- Conserves Energy
- Increases Comfort
- Reduces Landfill Waste
- Reduces Mold And Moisture
- Composed of Recycled Substances
Rockwool Insulation is created by melting down rocks at a temperature of 3000 degrees and then spinning the rock into fiber strands. The rockwool strands can be formed into batts or blown-in insulation material. Rockwool Insulation has an R-Value of about 3.0-R to 3.3-R per inch.
Rockwool material was originally discovered naturally occurring in Hawaii, as a result of high winds blowing the molten rock during volcanic eruptions, which was then found hanging from trees near Mauna Loa volcano in 1850.
Benefits of Rockwool Insulation:
- Long Lifespan
- Fire Resistant
- Pest Resistant
- Muffles Noises
- Higher R-Values
- Natural Resource
- Does Not Irritate Skin
- Sustainable Resource
- Moisture and Mold Resistant
- Does Not Degrade Over Time
Rockwool insulation can be installed in batts or blown-in and can be used in many areas of a home, business, pole barn and more. Call Rockford Insulation Pros for a free consultation today!
Fiberglass Insulation is created by spinning or blowing molten glass into fibers. Fiberglass is non-combustible and can be installed in batts, rolls, or blown-in. This is one of the most commonly used forms of insulation and is relatively inexpensive as well. Fiberglass is generally installed in ceilings, attics, basements, and walls. Fiberglass insulation has an R-Value of about R-2.2 to R-2.7 per inch.
Benefits of Fiberglass Insulation:
- Inexpensive
- Fire Retardant
- Muffles Sound
- Limits Air Flow
- Mold Resistant
- Easy Installation
Spray foam is a wet insulation which can be installed on floors, ceiling cavities, walls, spaces around electrical outlets and light fixtures, and spaces between walls and windows or doors.
Open Cell Spray Foam has an R-Value of around R-3.8 per inch, expanding to about 3 inches of thickness. When this type of foam is sprayed, bubbles inside burst, leaving behind small pockets of air. Water is able to flow through the foam, which prevents mold, while also not absorbing any moisture or losing any insulating performance. Open cell spray foam is also used to muffle sound.
Closed Cell Spray Foam has an R-Value of approximately R-7 per inch and expands to about 1 inch thickness. The air bubbles in closed cell foam do not rupture, which create closed air pockets and a vapor barrier. Water is unable to move through or be absorbed into closed cell foam, which also blocks mold and mildew. Closed cell foam is dense and strong, and can be left exposed after an install. This type of insulation is beneficial in flood zones, as the material repels water and creates an air seal.
Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation:
- Deters Pests
- Long Lifespan
- Fire Retardant
- Conserves Energy
- Increases Comfort
- Strengthens Walls
- Environmentally Friendly
- Reduces Mold And Moisture
- Fills Unseen Cracks And Holes
- Seals Off Allergens and Pollens
Radiant Barrier insulation is generally installed in attics and is composed of reflective material, which reflects about 90% of heat from a roof, rather than absorbing it into the structure. A radiant barrier also increases the R-value of your attic’s insulation, creating a warmer environment in the winter as well as keeping cool in the summer. A radiant barrier can be installed in new construction or retrofitted to an existing structure.
Benefits of Radiant Barrier Insulation:
- Increases R-Value
- Warmer In Winter
- Cooler In Summer
- Increases Comfort
- Reflects Away Heat
- Reduces Energy Costs
- Lowers Attic Temperatures
(BIBS) Blown-in blanket system is an insulation product composed of a mesh netting which is installed over wooden studs in a wall or ceiling and then blown-in with a loose fill insulation. The netting allows for loose fill insulation to be held in place while perfectly insulating around pipes, electrical boxes, and ductwork without leaving any air gaps.
The (BIBS) blown-in blanket system is a high density form of insulation which is extremely effective at filling in between small gaps and small crevices and in turn blocking out any air flow from getting through. Due to BIBS ability to pack loose fill into walls or ceilings without any gaps, this form of insulation is incredibly useful at sound deadening as well as blocking out drafts, pollens, pests, molds, pollutants and moisture.
Blown-in blanket system insulation has high R-Values of about R-4.23 per inch. This densely packed form of insulation is also resistant to settling which prevents any air gaps from forming. The BIBS product is created from non combustible materials which protect the building and inhabitants in the event of a fire. In addition, the blown-blanket system is created from recycled materials which are also mold resistant.
