Radiant Barrier Insulation

What Is Radiant Barrier Insulation?

Radiant Barrier insulation is generally installed in attics and is composed of reflective material, which reflects about 90% of heat from a roof, rather than absorbing it into the structure. A radiant barrier also increases the R-value of the attic’s insulation, creating a warmer environment in the winter as well as keeping cooler in the summertime. A radiant barrier can be installed in new construction or retrofitted to an existing structure.

Why Install Radiant Barrier Insulation?

Radiant barrier insulation material is designed with tiny lacerations, allowing the material to breath and in turn prevent condensation. This type of insulation material is non carcinogenic and does not irritate skin, is safe to breathe around, and does not release any harmful molecules into the air. Radiant barrier insulation is a long lasting insulation solution and cannot degenerate over time, due to the material being composed of foil.

Radiant barrier insulation can be added to the existing insulation in a structure such as a crawl space or attic, which increases the R-Value and efficiency of the entirety of the insulation installed. Additionally, radiant barrier insulation does not invite pests or rodents as it is composed of foil which is a non organic substance and cannot be used for sustenance.

Just as food stays warmer when wrapped inside foil, radiant barrier insulation is also used to wrap pipes and water tanks, which can increase water temperature. Wrapping ducts with radiant barrier insulation also increases the lifespan of an HVAC system.
